What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Diabetic foot is a serious complication of diabetes that affects the lower limbs, particularly the feet. It typically results from a combination of nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor blood circulation, which reduces the body’s ability to heal wounds. If left untreated, diabetic foot conditions can lead to ulcers, infections, and, in severe cases, amputation.

Causes of Diabetic Foot

Diabetic foot is mainly caused by:

  • Peripheral Neuropathy – Loss of sensation in the feet, making injuries go unnoticed.

  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) – Poor blood flow delays healing.

  • Foot Deformities – Bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet increase pressure points.

  • Infections – Minor wounds can worsen due to reduced immunity.

  • Poor Footwear – Tight or ill-fitting shoes cause friction and sores.

Risk Factors

The risk of developing diabetic foot increases with:

  • Long-standing or poorly managed diabetes

  • Smoking and alcohol use

  • High blood pressure and cholesterol

  • Kidney disease

  • History of foot ulcers or amputation

  • Improper foot hygiene or walking barefoot

Symptoms of Diabetic Foot

Early detection is key to preventing complications. Look out for:

  • Numbness or tingling in the feet

  • Swelling, redness, or warmth in the foot

  • Open wounds or ulcers that do not heal

  • Foul-smelling discharge

  • Changes in skin color or temperature

  • Pain while walking or resting (especially at night)

Diabetic Foot Treatment

Treatment focuses on healing wounds, preventing infection, and improving blood flow:

  • Wound Care – Cleaning, dressing, and offloading pressure from the affected area.

  • Infection Control – Antibiotics or minor surgical procedures if needed.

  • Vascular Treatment – Improving blood circulation through medication or procedures.

  • Debridement – Removal of dead tissue to promote healing.

  • Surgical Intervention – In severe cases, surgery may be required to save the limb.
