What is Gangrene

Gangrene is a serious condition that occurs when body tissue dies due to a lack of blood flow or a severe bacterial infection. It commonly affects the extremities such as the toes, fingers, feet, and hands but can also develop in muscles and internal organs. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent the spread and save the affected area.

Causes of Gangrene

Gangrene can be caused by:

  • Reduced blood supply (Ischemia) due to peripheral arterial disease

  • Infection, especially after surgery or trauma

  • Diabetes, which impairs healing and blood flow

  • Severe injuries or burns

  • Frostbite or long-term pressure ulcers

Risk Factors

Certain individuals are at higher risk of developing gangrene:

  • People with diabetes mellitus

  • Individuals with peripheral artery disease (PAD)

  • Smokers

  • Patients with weakened immune systems

  • Those with severe trauma or crush injuries

  • Individuals undergoing radiation therapy

Symptoms of Gangrene

Patients with diabetes must be especially cautious about foot care. Common symptoms indicating diabetic foot complications and risk of gangrene include:

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Swelling and redness

  • Slow-healing wounds or ulcers

  • Black or discolored skin on toes or foot

  • Pus or foul-smelling discharge

  • Pain or no sensation at all in the affected area
